The European Union once again refuses to recognize the elections in Crimea and to consider the politicians elected at them as official representatives of local authorities. This is stated in the statement published on September 14 by the official representative of the EU's foreign policy service Peter Stano.
“The European Union did not recognize the illegal annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol by the Russian Federation, and therefore does not recognize the holding of elections on the Crimean peninsula. Those who were elected by a vote organized by Russia will not be considered by the EU as representatives of these territories – they are part of Ukraine, ”the document says.
It also emphasizes that the bloc of countries invariably stands for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Ukrainian state.
On September 14, it became known that the acting governor of Sevastopol, Mikhail Razvozhaev, won the elections for the head of the city, gaining more than 85 percent of the vote. A day earlier, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry expressed a “strong protest” in connection with the elections in Crimea and Sevastopol.
At the same time, it became known that State Duma deputy Natalya Poklonskaya sent information to the UN about the water supply to Crimea: the Ukrainian government blocked the access of water to the peninsula, demanding its return to the country. Due to the drought in 2020, local residents are facing water shortages.
Crimea became part of the Russian Federation in March 2014 after a referendum on the peninsula. The accession is not recognized by the EU and NATO countries, Ukraine declares the “Russian occupation” of this territory.
