Support from Norway and Denmark
During President Vladimir Zelensky's visit to Norway for the Nordic summit, Norwegian and Danish leaders announced assistance to Ukraine in countering full-scale Russian aggression.
Norway
Until the end of 2023, Norway will provide Ukraine with an additional aid package worth $800 million, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said during a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.
— Today Norway announces clear additional support for Ukraine. I want to share this information with you. The government must pay nurses, doctors, teachers and other workers, so we have the opportunity to help with $1 billion for 2023, which ends — he said.
Stere noted that Norway is increasing “financial and humanitarian support by about $800 million this year”.
— We also want to announce that we will support the Ukrainian people in 2024 from the very first months. Direct economic support for these critical services so that there are no delays in the delivery of aid to Ukrainians, — emphasized the Norwegian Prime Minister.
According to him, we are also talking about strengthening the protection of critical infrastructure, thanks to the supply of additional air defense systems.
Denmark
In turn, in Denmark, head of government Mette Frederiksen announced a new aid package to Ukraine worth €1 billion.
Aid will include tanks, drones and ammunition to meet Ukraine's immediate needs.
— Now is not the time to get tired of the war that brave Ukrainian soldiers wage every day… there is no doubt that we will support Ukraine's struggle for as long as it takes, — Frederiksen stated.
European Parliament for negotiations with Ukraine on accession to the EU
The European Parliament called on the participants of the EU summit to approve the decision to begin negotiations with Ukraine on accession to the EU, and also condemned the statements of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban about Ukraine’s membership.
MEPs called on the participants of the summit on December 14-15 to decide on the start of EU accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova, as well as with Bosnia and Herzegovina — subject to the implementation of certain reform steps. Parliamentarians also called for granting candidate status to Georgia.
Parliamentarians also condemned the statements of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban about the start of negotiations on accession to the EU with Ukraine, as well as about changing the country’s policy towards Kosovo.
— Mr Orbán's statements are hampering the EU enlargement process, warn MEPs, who remind the Council of the potential negative consequences of Hungary's presidency of the Council in July 2024, — says the press release.
Scholz called for increased aid to Ukraine
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz calls on other countries not to reduce their support for Ukraine and help in the fight against full-scale Russian aggression. He said this during a speech in the Bundestag.
— Putin is determined to bring Ukraine to its knees through military means. The Russian president is betting that international support for Ukraine will wane. The danger cannot be ruled out that this calculation may work, — states Scholz.
Germany, in turn, will donate armored vehicles, ammunition and winter protective clothing to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as electricity generators to eliminate problem areas in the energy system.
Slovakia will not block Ukraine’s negotiations on joining the EU
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico called Ukraine “not ready” to the start of negotiations on joining the European Union, but promised that Bratislava would not block this decision during the summit on December 14.
— We will not interfere with the decision of the European Council to begin negotiations with Ukraine. This is a political decision, it has nothing to do with reality. Ukraine is absolutely not ready to start negotiations, — stated Fico.
