On September 4, the United States expanded sanctions against Russia. This time, the list included hostile propagandists and hackers.

The sanctions affected ten individuals and two legal entities, including Margarita Simonyan. She is the editor-in-chief of the RT channel.

Sanctions against RT and RaHDit

The US Treasury Department has officially accused Russia of attempting to influence the 2024 US presidential election through Kremlin-controlled media and online platforms. They pointed out that Russian state media use various tools, such as generative fakes and disinformation based on artificial intelligence.

The leadership of the Russian propaganda channel RT and the hacker group RaHDit fell under US sanctions.

RT used a fake campaign to conceal its own involvement or the involvement of the Russian government in the creation of content designed to influence American audiences, the report says.

The following were subject to US sanctions: RT editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan, her deputies Elizaveta Brodskaya and Anton Anisimov, deputy director of English-language broadcasting Andrei Kiyashko, head of digital media projects Konstantin Kalashnikov and his subordinate Elena Afanasyeva.

As for the pro-Kremlin hacker group RaHDit, sanctions were imposed against Alexey Garashchenko, Anastasia Ermoshkina and Alexander Nezhentsev. This group consists of current or former Russian special services.
