Trump's pressure is intensifying: how political manipulation in the United States is delaying aid to Ukraine

US senators unveiled a sweeping bipartisan $118 billion deal that includes aid to Ukraine and Israel, as well as strengthening the US southern border. It is worth noting that support for our state remains within the more than 60 billion dollars that were previously announced.

At the same time, Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson said that he would not put to a vote the bill presented in the Senate on additional funding for national security needs. Candidate of Political Sciences, international relations expert Stanislav Zhelikhovsky explained 24 Channel, why the United States cannot agree on assistance to Ukraine.

Political impasse

US President Joseph Biden called on Congress to pass legislation for the sake of immigration reform and help American allies. Now this bill will be considered in the Senate.

There are positive signs that it may still be passed by the upper house of Congress, but the hardest passage will be through the lower house, where there is great resistance from the radical wing of the Republican Party and Johnson. Therefore, there are concerns that this bill may fail and not reach President Biden's desk. As a result, Ukraine may not receive funds,” Zhelikhovsky said.

He suggested that perhaps the speaker of the House of Representatives and his other party members are not satisfied with the fact that aid to Israel is a little less, than in the bill, which provided for assistance to Israel separately from Ukraine.

However, according to an international affairs expert, the reason is politics and the aggressive election campaign that is taking place in the United States. In fact, the situation has reached a political impasse and now it is difficult to predict whether it will be possible to get out of it, because further the degree of tension will only increase.

“Our state has become a victim of political manipulation, especially on the part of the Republican Party, and, unfortunately, we cannot do anything about it until the situation within the American political community is actually resolved,” noted Zhelikhovsky.

What is the influence of Trump

Despite this, Ukrainians should understand that the situation that has now arisen around the allocation of aid Ukraine, first of all, is not due to the fact that the United States of America is tired and does not want to help anymore, but because of internal politics.

The pressure on Mike Johnson from Donald Trump and other radical Republicans is constantly increasing. They even threaten Johnson that he will lose his job if he passes the bill. He found himself hostage to the political situation, like the entire American Congress, so this is a really big problem,” the international relations expert added.

According to him, the problem here is not in the United States or Biden administration, but political games. The White House is doing its best to ensure that this bill is passed. Ukrainian diplomacy also plays an important role, which is trying in every possible way to convince the radical wing of the Republican Party.

Allocation of aid to Ukraine from the United States

  • On February 4, the US Senate published the text of an agreement on national security and assistance to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. The bill provides a total of $118.2 billion. Of these, 60.1 billion are provided for assistance to Ukraine.
  • Note that Joe Biden called on Congress to meet and quickly adopt this bipartisan agreement.
  • Madam Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States Oksana Markarova announced that voting for a compromise bill on assistance to Ukraine and Israel could take place on February 7.
