John Hume
The winner of the Nobel peace prize, one of the founders of the Social democratic and labour party (SDLP) John Hume died in Ireland. This was reported in the Twitter party.
He was 83 years old. “We all live in the Ireland, what he thought it would be — peaceful, free to choose their own destiny”, — said in the recording SDLP.
John Hume received the Nobel peace prize in 1998 along with the leader of the Ulster unionist party David Trimble. They were awarded “for their efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict in Northern Ireland.”
We are talking about the Belfast agreement (also known as the good Friday agreement) 1998-th year. It concluded thanks to the efforts of Hume and Trimble. The paper helped to resolve the conflict in Ireland and recreate the body, performing the functions of a local Parliament — the Northern Ireland Assembly. A peace Treaty between Britain and Ireland ended years of armed confrontation between British authorities and the local nationalist radical groups.
The conflict in Northern Ireland lasted for several decades, from 1960-ies. The militants of the Irish Republican army (IRA) attacked the military in the UK and commit acts of terrorism between Catholics and Protestants were violent clashes. Victims of the conflict began more than 3.5 thousand people, of which 1.7 thousand civilians.
