The struggle for the Northern Sea Route, waged by the Western countries, could provoke a new world war. This opinion was expressed by the FAN military observer “Komsomolskaya Pravda” Viktor Baranets.
According to the expert, since the Northern Sea Route “lies entirely in the territorial waters” of Russia, the right to own it entirely belongs to Moscow.
“This means that other countries that want to use the route must follow the letter of the international shipping rules and ask us for permission to pass their ships,” he explained.
At the same time, the United States is confident that the Northern Sea Route is a global property and there is no need to ask Moscow for something, hire pilots and pay Russia for the damage caused to its ecology.
“Moreover, the Americans themselves are beginning to militarize the region: they have planted a whole regiment of aircraft in Alaska to cover their ships moving along this route. And if someday there is a new world war, then one of its reasons may be just a fierce struggle for the possession of this strategically important route and the Arctic as a whole, ”he is sure.
As Rambler reported earlier, political scientists noted that cooperation between Russia and China in the Arctic could cause the United States of America to lose global dominance. And military experts drew attention to the fact that a further build-up of NATO forces in the region may, with a high degree of probability, lead to a clash with Russia's interests. In order to avoid an open conflict, analysts recommended the parties to sit down at the negotiating table.
