The United States has resumed large-scale military exercises with South Korea.
The United States is ready to use any means, including nuclear weapons, to defend South Korea.
This was stated by Pentagon Chief Lloyd Austin at a joint press conference with South Korean Defense Minister Kim Un-hyun.
“Our commitment to extended deterrence remains unwavering. It is provided by the full range of American defense assets – from conventional missile systems to nuclear and advanced non-nuclear weapons,” he emphasized.
The US Secretary of Defense also reported that the United States has resumed large-scale military exercises with South Korea, which will “significantly strengthen the combat readiness” of the two countries.
US statements about its readiness to defend South Korea by any means necessary have become increasingly frequent amid growing public support for the idea of Seoul creating its own nuclear program.
South Korea is a party to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. The country abandoned its nuclear program in the 1970s in exchange for security guarantees from the United States. In 1991, the United States withdrew its last tactical nuclear weapons from South Korea.
Recall that South Korea is considering the possibility of sending a group of military observers to Ukraine to monitor the actions of North Korean troops on the front lines of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
