The decision to cast the role of Cleopatra to a white actress caused a storm of outrage

by alex

In Hollywood, a new racial scandal erupted – fighters for the rights of blacks are outraged by the decision to give the role of Cleopatra to Israeli actress Gal Gadot, who was nicknamed “Wonder Woman” after one of the characters she played.

English-language social networks are full of angry comments, in which users, recognizing the talent of a 35-year-old Israeli woman, insist on “historical justice” according to which either a black actress or, in extreme cases, an Egyptian woman should play Cleopatra.

Runet did not stand aside and tried to remind the fighters for racial rights that Cleopatra, who ruled Egypt from 51 to 30 BC, did not have African roots, being a representative of the Ptolemaic dynasty, which originated from the half-brother of Alexander the Great. The images of the queen on coins that have come down to us from antiquity represent Cleopatra as a typical Greek woman. But when it comes to racial struggle, the arguments of historians do not matter.

At the beginning of this year, social media users noticed that the role of Anna Karenina is played by the Nigerian-born actress Oni Uhiara in the Manchester theater. In addition, Countess Vronskaya turned out to be dark-skinned. However, it didn’t come to protests against the director’s somewhat strange decision, confining himself to jokes on Twitter.
