The woman’s face was disfigured after 2004, her husband Thomas shot him with a shotgun. The shot broke her nose, cheeks, upper part of the mouth and eyes. The woman’s face were hundreds of fragments of shells and bones. All was only the upper eyelids, forehead, lower lip and chin.
Then the woman’s husband turned the gun on himself but survived, too, but with a much less serious injuries. He was later convicted of attempted murder, aggravated battery, and sentenced to seven years imprisonment.
Culp underwent 30 operations on her face, including surgery, during which doctors took parts of her ribs to make cheekbones, and made my upper jaw one of the bones of her legs. In the 22-hour operation in December 2008, the doctors replaced a woman 80 percent of the face using bones, muscles, nerves, skin and blood vessels from another woman who just died.
It is noteworthy that Culp later said that she forgave the husband for what he did. “I will always love him,” she told us journalist Diane Sawyer in 2009. “I mean, I have two kids [from it]. But you know what? I can’t be with him anymore”, she concluded then.
