The state corporation “Roskosmos” pondered the prospect of establishing a habitable base on the natural satellite of Jupiter Callisto. The executive director of the corporation for promising programs and science Alexander Bloshenko spoke about the plans, TASS reports.
The corporation considers Callisto to be one of the most attractive places for a habitable base, along with the Moon and Mars. He stressed that this is the third place in the solar system with such a prospect.
In particular, a large amount of water ice on Jupiter's moon, under which an ice-free ocean is hidden, allows the possibility of building a base. Seismic activity was also recorded on Callisto. This indicates that the satellite has a hot central core, Bloshenko explained.
In July, Dmitry Rogozin, the general director of Roscosmos, said that Russia and China will most likely explore the moon together. Prior to that, he declared about Russia's unwillingness to participate in the race for the exploration of the moon.
