Faiz Sarraj
The head of the government of national accord (PNC) Libya Faiz Sarraj announced his imminent resignation. Reported by Reuters.
“I declare my sincere desire to transfer my powers to a new executive authority by the end of October at the most,” Sarraj said. He explained his intention by the fact that by this time the negotiating committee would have to complete its work and a new presidential council would be formed. Sarraj also hoped for the possibility of soon successfully holding parliamentary and presidential elections.
At the same time, early sources in the Algerian presidential administration spoke about pressure on the head of government against the background of mass protests in Tripoli, which began due to the economic crisis.
Sarraj has served as prime minister since 2016, while he is also chairman of the country's presidential council, the highest executive body in Libya.
After the assassination in 2011 of Muammar Gaddafi, who ruled since 1969, a situation of dual power developed in Libya. Currently, in the east, in the city of Tobruk, the parliament is sitting, which is supported by the Libyan National Army of Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, and in the west in Tripoli – the government of national accord. At the same time, the PNC actively supports Turkey, and Egypt and Saudi Arabia are on the side of the LNA. In this connection, relations between Turkey and Egypt have worsened, the countries are in confrontation.
