Former President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko refused to come for interrogation in a criminal case of high treason. This was announced by the politician's lawyer Ilya Novikov on the air of the Ukraine 24 TV channel, RIA Novosti reports.
“We have already said no, and he confirmed it,” the lawyer replied when asked whether Poroshenko would come for interrogation. According to Novikov, the summons was written incorrectly, and the case itself is a show and a persecution of the opposition.
Prior to that, another lawyer of the politician, Igor Golovan, wanted to call the current President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky as a witness in the high treason case. In addition to him, the lawyer wanted to see other politicians in court, including Deputy Prime Minister Irina Vereshchuk, deputies David Arakhamia, Daniil Getmantsev, Maryana Bezuglaya and Fyodor Venislavsky.
The Ukrainian authorities suspected Poroshenko of treason in early October. Law enforcers released the records concerning the case of Viktor Medvedchuk, head of the political council of the Opposition Platform – For Life party. These materials, according to security officials, prove the conspiracy of the former president of the republic with the “separatists”, including his involvement in the purchase of coal from the territories of Donbass not controlled by Kiev during the hostilities.
On December 17, Poroshenko left the country and went to Turkey and Poland to participate in meetings and an international conference on the topic “Russia-Ukraine-NATO.” On the eve of his departure, an employee of the Ukrainian State Bureau of Investigation tried to hand him a summons in a criminal case, but the politician ignored him, got into the car and drove away.
