Ukraine will become a member of the Alliance, but it is too early to talk about an invitation.
NATO Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy Boris Ruge is skeptical about the likelihood of Ukraine being invited to the Alliance at the summit in Washington, which will take place in July 2024.
He said this in an interview with Lithuanian radio LRT.
Boris Ruge recalled that last year in Vilnius a historic NATO decision was made, clarifying that Ukraine will become a member of the Alliance, but it is too early to talk about an invitation.
“There are many things to do on the path to NATO membership. This includes reforms in the security sector, political reforms in Ukraine. We will see if the allies in Washington, hopefully the 32 allies, including Sweden, can agree on this,” he noted.
NATO Assistant Secretary General noted that there is no doubt that Ukraine is moving towards NATO membership, but it is too early to say whether there will be another step. He named one of the reasons that in many countries of the Alliance, in particular in the United States, elections will be held in 2024, which will provoke political debates, including on this issue.
“The next step will be an invitation, and it is unclear whether we will see such an invitation in Washington… But I think that we will find ways to emphasize the fact that Ukraine is moving closer to NATO,” Boris Ruge concluded.
Recall that NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Joan said that at the next summit of NATO leaders, which will be held in Washington in July 2024, Ukraine will be one of the priorities.
