Faiz Sarraj
The head of the government of national accord (PNC) of Libya, Faiz Sarraj, has decided to resign. Bloomberg writes about this with reference to informed sources in the government.
By the end of the week, he should announce his decision. Sarraj will continue to perform his duties until negotiations between the PNC and the Libyan National Army (LNA) in Geneva, which will take place at the end of September.
Sarraj is said to have discussed his plans with Libyan and international partners. The UAE and Egypt should support the resignation of the prime minister, the sources said. Presumably, the speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, may become the new prime minister.
After the assassination of Muammar Gaddafi, who ruled since 1969, in 2011, a situation of dual power developed in Libya. Currently, in the east in the city of Tobruk, parliament is sitting, which is supported by the Libyan National Army of Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, and in the west in Tripoli – the government of national accord. At the same time, the PNC actively supports Turkey, and Egypt and Saudi Arabia are on the side of the LNA. In this connection, relations between Turkey and Egypt have worsened, the countries are in confrontation.
