Europe has increased pressure on the “shadow fleet” of Russian oil tankers

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that 44 European countries supported the plan to combat “shadow fleet” Russian Federation, whose tankers are used to circumvent international sanctions.

This was reported by Bloomberg.

— Russian “shadow fleet” poses a threat to our countries and other states that depend on the seas and oceans. Many ships of this “shadow fleet” uninsured and poorly maintained. Many of them are engaged in activities that violate basic safety and environmental standards, — said Keir Starmer.

Joint plan Call to action would halt the operation of 600 ships that Western countries believe are used by Moscow to transport about 1.7 million barrels of oil a day, Downing Street said in a statement.

The UK government also announced sanctions on 11 tankers that are also used to transport Russian oil.

— Together with our European partners, we have sent a clear message to those who support Putin's attempts to circumvent sanctions: we will not allow the “shadow fleet” Russia and the dirty money it generates can flow freely through European waters and put our security at risk,” Starmer said.

A fleet of oil tankers is being used to finance Russia's war in Ukraine and also poses an environmental threat to Europe's waterways. Some of the ships also transport weapons to Russia or operate as wiretapping stations, the UK statement said.

Now more than 60 oil tankers are under sanctions by the US, UK or European Union authorities. Of the 11 tankers, two have already fallen under EU sanctions. It is noted that as a result of the measures taken, the vast majority of tankers have already stopped loading.
