He was detained on espionage charges in March 2023. Gershkovich became the first foreign reporter to be arrested in Russia on espionage charges since the end of Cold war. Sverdlovsk regional the court found Gershkovich guilty of espionage and sentenced him to 16 years of imprisonment in a maximum security colony. The court completed the investigation into the Gershkovich case in two sessions. The prosecution demanded 18 years in a maximum security colony for Gershkovich. The journalist did not admit guilt. Journalist Evan Gershkovich was detained on March 29 in Yekaterinburg on charges of espionage. He allegedly “collected information about the activities of one of the enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex.” It is known that Gershkovich has been working in Russia since 2017. It was reported that before his arrest he was interested in the attitude of Russian society towards recruitment into the private military company Wagner. The investigation claims that the journalist was caught “in flagrante delicto”, but no no evidence of this was ever provided.
