< p _ngcontent-sc181="" class="news-annotation">President of Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky responded to a petition asking him to veto bill 8271, which increases the criminal liability of the military. The head of state signed it a week ago.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed that the law he signed is aimed at improving the state of military discipline and law and order during military service, increasing the combat readiness of military units and their ability to perform certain tasks to protect the Fatherland.
Zelensky's response to a request to veto the bill
The head of state noted that when deciding to sign, he took into account the position of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valery Zaluzhny and the commanders of military units.
The military leadership is convinced that this law will avoid unreasonable losses of personnel.
He also called on the Cabinet of Ministers to improve the mechanism for applying military liability for offenses.
The President emphasized that these punishments should be applied taking into account the individual nature of legal responsibility, the severity of the offense committed, the principles of justice and the rule of law.
At the same time, he called the combat capability of military units, including the observance of military discipline, a guarantee .
What we know about the military law
Recall that on December 15, a petition appeared to the president with a request to veto the bill on strengthening the punishment of military personnel. More than 30,000 people signed it in just one day.
On December 19, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valeriy Zaluzhny supported the high-profile bill. He publicly asked the president to sign the law.

The document provides for the appropriate amendments to the Criminal Code, the Code of Administrative Offenses and other legislative acts. In particular, the courts will be prohibited from mitigating punishment or giving suspended sentences for military men convicted of certain types of crimes, including:
- disobedience,
- failure to comply with an order,
- unauthorized abandonment of the military unit,
- desertion,
- spontaneous abandonment of the battlefield.
