President Vladimir Zelensky, on the anniversary of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, called for pressure on Russia to return the Zaporizhia NPP to the control of Ukraine.
The head of state published a corresponding appeal in Telegram.
— Radiation does not recognize borders and does not distinguish between national flags. The Chernobyl disaster showed the world how quickly deadly threats can arise, — the message says.
Zelensky noted that tens of thousands of people, at the cost of their health and lives, stopped the growth of the Chernobyl disaster and eliminated its terrible consequences in 1986 and years later.

He recalled that at the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant was occupied for 35 days. Russian troops plundered the laboratories, captured the guards, abused the personnel, and used the Chernobyl nuclear power plant to launch further military operations.
The need to return the Zaporizhia NPP to the control of Ukraine
— For 785 days now, the largest Zaporozhye nuclear power plant in Europe has been held hostage by Russian terrorists. And this is the responsibility of the whole world — put pressure on Russia so that the Zaporizhia NPP is liberated and returned under the full control of Ukraine and that all nuclear facilities in Ukraine are protected from attacks by the Russian Federation, — the President emphasized.
Zelensky added that only this will guarantee that the world will not experience new radiation disasters — exactly what threatens every day of the occupiers’ stay at the Zaporizhia NPP.
He called for remembering the strength and dedication of the people who saved lives in 1986, and also for appreciating everyone who is helping to protect life now.
Previously, the IAEA reported that on the morning of April 18, the territory of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant was attacked by drones.
