Zelensky on assistance to Moldova: Ready to provide coal and send specialists to the power plant

Ukraine is ready to provide Moldova with coal to overcome the energy crisis, and our country can also send its specialists to the Moldovan State District Power Plant to increase electricity production.

This was stated by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky at a press conference with Moldovan President Maia Sandu.

Cooperation between Moldova and Ukraine in the energy sector

He noted that Russia sent anthracite to Tiraspol, which it stole from the occupied territories of Ukraine.

According to Zelensky, the Moldovan State District Power Plant is capable of producing 10 times more electricity – from 220 megawatts to 2 gigawatts.

— If our people go there, it will be capable of producing 2 gigawatts for sure. That is, 10 times more and more than necessary. If we give them coal at a low price or even for free, then we can get electricity instead of this coal. This is fair: we give coal, they get electricity for themselves, for all of Moldova, we get electricity for ourselves, — the head of state noted.

Reference. The Moldovan State District Power Plant is a large thermal power plant located in the city of Dnestrovsk. It is under the control of the unrecognized Transnistria.

The total capacity of the plant is 2520 MW. The GRES has the ability to produce electricity using natural gas, coal and fuel oil.

Recall that on January 1, 2025, Russian Gazprom suspended gas supplies to Transnistria. This happened exactly when Ukraine stopped gas transit from the Russian Federation.

Russia explained its decision by “regular failure to fulfill payment obligations” by Moldovagaz. After this, Tirasteploenergo stopped supplying heat and hot water to residential buildings.

On January 15, following negotiations at the Russian Ministry of Energy, the head of the unrecognized Transnistria, Vadim Krasnoselsky, announced that Russia would supply gas as humanitarian aid.
