Zelensky: New security agreements with Germany and France are not an alternative to assistance from the United States

Agreements in the field of security and military assistance concluded with Germany, France and a number of other countries, as well as those that are at the preparation stage, are not an alternative to military assistance from the United States.

This statement was made by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky in an interview following the Munich Security Conference.

Results of the security conference in Munich

– We have three agreements today. There was a conversation with several other countries. There are agreements on the security of agreements… Several more agreements have been agreed upon, and we will increase these security guarantees. I do not believe that this is an alternative to United States assistance — I was just asked about it. I believe that this is a very important, completely different, additional powerful assistance to Ukraine, which Ukrainians can count on — not for a year, not for two — for 10 years,” said the Ukrainian president.

Zelensky noted that there are no security guarantees from the United States yet, but expressed optimism about their prospects.

– The teams are already working, two stages of negotiations have already taken place. I see this as a positive in the near future,” he added.

Zelensky called “powerful” agreements concluded with Germany and France, and announced that he expects the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to Ukraine.

– Today there are two agreements — with Germany and France — very important, powerful. Ten-year agreements, this year from Germany 7.1 billion support — This is a powerful package… So far, the German agreement is one of the most powerful. Although, nevertheless, they are very different. And we expect a strong French agreement with a serious package — There is already a decision on it from Emmanuel Macron. We also expect it in Ukraine. He said that it will happen, but I can’t talk about the date yet due to security issues. This is also important,” said the Ukrainian president.

We recall that on Friday, February 16, Zelensky visited Berlin, where, together with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, he signed a bilateral agreement on security cooperation in continuation of the G7 declaration on security guarantees for Ukraine.

Later, the Ukrainian president went to Paris, where Vladimir Zelensky and French President Emmanuel Macron signed a bilateral agreement on security guarantees for a period of 10 years.
