Zelensky invited to first European Council summit after appointment of new president

European leaders will soon hold their first summit after the change in leadership of the EU institutions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has also been invited to it.

This was reported by 24 Channel with reference to a letter of invitation from European Council President António Costa to EU leaders. The meeting will take place on December 19.

What is known about the upcoming European Council summit

According to the information released, António Costa is convening a summit of EU leaders for the first time since taking over as President of the European Council in early December 2024. He noted that the main issue on the agenda will be the war in Ukraine and support for Kyiv in the fight.

I have just returned from a visit to Kyiv, on the first day of my mandate. We must stay with Ukraine as long as it takes and do everything possible to ensure that the Russian invasion is defeated and international law prevails, he says.

According to him, the aforementioned meeting on December 19 is an excellent opportunity to send a unified and clear message of assistance to Ukraine to achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting peace on the territory of our state. That is why Volodymyr Zelensky was also invited to the summit.

According to the media, by taking part in the summit, the Ukrainian leader will be able to share the latest events with European leaders, in particular the situation in Ukraine, and also formulate his own views on how Europe can better support our country.

In addition to the above, the event will also discuss the place of the European Union in the world and the results of Hungary's presidency of the Council.

Recall that on the morning of December 1, the new President of the European Council António Costa and the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas arrived in Kiev. They arrived in the capital of Ukraine on their first day in their new positions.
