President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy held the first meeting with the appointed Permanent Representative of the Head of State in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea Tamila Tasheva.

The meeting was also attended by Deputy Permanent Representative of the President to the Autonomous Republic of Crimea Denis Chistikov, Head of the Operations Support Service Crimean Platform Maria Tomak, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Emine Dzhaparova and Deputy Head of the Office of the Head of State Igor Zhovkva. The invitees discussed the mood of the local population , as well as the prospects for the liberation of the peninsula.

There is a population in Crimea protesting against the war

Zelensky noted that it is important for the Ukrainian authorities to understand the mood of people in the occupied Crimea and Sevastopol.

We are aware that active and caring citizens of Ukraine on the peninsula will be our main support in the liberation of Crimea from occupation. We must support them,” the President emphasized.

According to him, in addition to the work aimed at building up international political support for the de-occupation, attention should be paid to the adoption of additional laws and regulations that help ensure the rights of Ukrainian citizens in Crimea.

At the same time, Tamila Tasheva stressed that it is important maintain contact with Ukrainian citizens protesting against the war and showing their solidarity with mainland Ukraine.

They should feel that we see and appreciate these signals of solidarity with the occupation,” she said.

According to her, there are many high-profile cases on the peninsula related to the persecution of activists.

Tasheva recalled the deputy head of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, Nariman Dzhelyalov, who was arrested after participating in the inaugural summit of the Crimean Platform in 2021, and also handed over his letter addressed to Zelensky.

In a letter, Nariman Dzhelyalov, imprisoned by the invaders, expressed gratitude to the President for signing the law introducing social and legal protection for political prisoners, prisoners of war and civilian hostages.

Discussion of the Crimean Platform

The participants of the meeting discussed the prospects for the development of the Crimean Platform initiative of the President of Ukraine. In particular, the holding of international events in August 2022, which will bring together participants in the founding summit of the Crimean Platform and potentially expand the geography of states that support the declaration of an agreed mechanism aimed at the return of Crimea.

  • Back in September 2020 Vladimir Zelensky announced the creation of the Crimean platform. The goal of the initiative is to join forces for the de-occupation of Crimea.
  • The first summit of the Crimean Platform was held in the capital of Ukraine on August 23, 2021.
  • 46 countries and international organizations take part in the founding summit. According to Ukrainian intelligence, at least one country refused to participate in the summit under pressure from Russia.
