According to the president, earlier exchanges were not so large-scale and without clear agreements. However, now it is very important for Russia to show that a diplomatic process is supposedly underway.

For the Kremlin, the main goal is to tear the US away from Ukraine and reduce aid provision.

— To do this, we need to demonstrate diplomacy. Diplomacy is demonstrated by the possibility of meeting with the Ukrainian side, preferably without America. How can we end the meeting on a positive note? With exchanges. To do this, we need an appropriate number of exchanges, — Zelensky noted.

He also noted that if more meetings take place, it will show the US that the diplomatic process is ongoing, and because of this, sanctions may be postponed.

“And while exchanges are underway, meetings at the level of leaders will also be postponed. Because it is definitely not beneficial for them,” the president added.

Let us recall that the last prisoner exchange under the Istanbul agreements took place on June 20. Most of the returned defenders had been in Russian captivity for more than two years.
