The President criticized Scholz for trying to 'keep the balance' between Ukraine and Russia/Office of the President
President Volodymyr Zelensky called on German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to be more unambiguous in relations with Ukraine. The head of state also criticized the politician for his attempts to “maintain a balance” between Kyiv and Moscow.
Scholz will probably arrive in Kyiv on June 16 . French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi are to arrive with him.
Scholz should be more unambiguous
Zelensky noted that Ukraine needs Scholz to ensure Germany's support. At the same time, the head of state mentioned the chancellor's attempts to “keep a balance” between Kyiv and Moscow.
He and his government must make a decision: we must not try to balance between Ukraine and relations with Russia,” the president remarked.
The German government is often accused of political swings. In turn, ordinary Germans have long made their choice. Zelensky thanked them for their obvious support for Ukraine
According to the president, Scholz should be more unambiguous in relations with Ukraine. The chancellor should take a position, and not look for where “relations with Russia and Ukraine hurt the least.” After all, this approach is not correct.
Scholz's visit during the war is very important
The President noted that before the start of a full-scale war with Russia, the West did not respond to his calls to put the aggressor country in its place. In particular, by providing weapons to Ukraine in advance. At the same time, Germany began to support our state much later than other countries.
“Germany came for the supply of weapons a little later than some of our neighboring countries. This is a fact,” the head of state added.
However, Zelensky stressed that the visit of Scholz during the war is important. However, this trip should not be limited only to photographs. The head of state hopes that the German Chancellor will announce in the capital about:
- increase in military support;
- support for granting Ukraine candidate status for EU membership;
- tightening sanctions against Russia.
A brief about the possible visit of Macron and Scholz to Ukraine.
- Scholz and Macron, unlike a number of other world leaders, have not yet visited Ukraine after the start of a full-scale war. However, they are constantly in touch with Zelensky.
- Also, the leaders of France and Germany constantly make phone calls to Russian President Vladimir Putin. They have been criticized for this for a long time.
- In the media on June 12, information appeared that Macron, Scholz and Draghi were planning to visit Ukraine before the G7 summit.
- Advisor to the French Ambassador to Ukraine Bruno Cassanel said, that the president plans to arrive in Kyiv on June 15 after he pays a visit to Moldova. However, he stressed that “nothing has been decided yet.”
- A few hours after his statement, Cassanel denied his own report. Like, he “does not have the authority to comment on this.”
- At the same time, Scholz refused to confirm his visit to Ukraine this week.
