Zapad 2025 exercises will be 2-3 times smaller – Nauseda

The scale of the joint military exercises between Russia and Belarus West, planned for September 2025, will be 2-3 times smaller than in 2021.

This was stated by Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda after a meeting of the State Defense Council, LRT reports.

According to Nauseda, the reduction in the scale of the exercises is due to Russia's war against Ukraine and the redeployment of a large number of equipment and personnel to the front.

“The scale of the exercises will be two or three times smaller in number than in 2021,” the president emphasized.

Despite the reduction in the number of participants, the format and nature of the exercise remains unchanged, so Lithuania and its allies are prepared for the unexpected.

Lithuanian Defence Minister Dovilė Šakalienė added that national and allied exercises will be held in Lithuania at the same time as in the West.

“During this period, intensive work will continue with a large number of allies, which significantly increases our readiness for any developments,” she said.

Let us recall that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky commented on the possibility of Russian troops participating in the Zapad-2025 joint exercises with Belarus.

In addition, according to Zelensky, according to the latest reports from the Foreign Intelligence Service, military maneuvers may be moved further away from the Ukrainian and European borders.
