The IAEA mission that hit the Zaporozhye NPP made its first statement. It was noted that the integrity of the ZNPP was violated several times, and the plant workers are in a difficult emotional state, but thanks to their professionalism they do their job.
It rarely happens that IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi rode at the head of the mission. Oleksiy Yozhak, an expert from the National Institute for Strategic Studies, spoke about this for Channel 24.
“They showed that Russia does not dare to create a significant nuclear incident at the ZNPP with the release of radiation. Even against the backdrop of the start of the Ukrainian counteroffensive in the South. And we heard many threats that, they say, just try,” Yezhak said.
What the mission checked
According to the expert, Ukrainian defenders can attack and dismiss Kherson and be sure that the incident will not happen at Zaporozhye NPP.
The second thing you can be more or less sure of, at least at the IAEA level, they didn’t talk about it, but still the main mission is to prevent civilian nuclear materials from being used to create nuclear weapons,” Yezh said.
He explained that neither fresh nor spent nuclear fuel from the Zaporizhzhya NPP came to Iran to pay for the drones. The IAEA always checks such things.
Monitoring for de-occupation
Ezhak noted that there is information from Russian sources, but this seems to be true, about the constant monitoring of the Zaporizhzhya NPP until the moment of de-occupation. Now 5 members of the mission remain until September 3 to install certain equipment, and after that 2 representatives of the IAEA will be permanently on site.
“The IAEA knows this station very well. All the security measures that developed for Ukrainian nuclear power plants after the collapse of the USSR, took place with the direct participation of the IAEA, so they technically know what to check,” Yezhak added. NPP: watch the video
