Without the US and NATO, Ukraine may lose its independence, says Merkel Angelika Baibak

Without the support of the US and NATO, Ukraine will not be able to remain an independent state after the Russian attack. Today, the transatlantic partnership is even more necessary than before.

This was stated by former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, reports 24 Channel with reference to Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

Merkel spoke about Ukraine

Merkel reported that with the attack of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin on Ukraine, the main principle of the post-war European agenda – territorial inviolability – was suspended. She stated this while speaking at a reception of the Christian Democratic Union in Dusseldorf.

Thus, the former German chancellor believes that only with the US and NATO could it be possible to ensure that “Putin does not win the war and Ukraine remains independent.”

Merkel also spoke about Trump, calling him a “special president.” The politician is convinced that the Republican “defends the legitimate interests of the United States,” but Merkel does not believe in “win-win situations” in multilateral cooperation. The former chancellor is convinced that in any situation there is always a winner and a loser.

We will not change Donald Trump, but we can respond to him, Merkel said.

Earlier, Angela Merkel reported that, while serving as German Chancellor, she tried to hinder Ukraine's desire to quickly join NATO. She admitted that she was afraid that Vladimir Putin would respond militarily.

In her book “Freedom. Memoirs 1954 – 2021” Merkel said that she saw risks in the presence of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Crimea. In addition, the former chancellor was convinced that Russia would have attacked Ukraine earlier if it had started moving towards NATO in 2008.

In particular, Merkel is convinced that in such a case, “Putin would not have stood aside and watched as Ukraine joined NATO.”
