And although heavy rains in the fall can complicate the movement of heavy equipment due to wet soil, Ukrainian troops advance in small groups and mainly on foot.
– Weather can be a serious obstacle during the advance, but given that , as we move forward, mostly without equipment, I don't think the weather will have much effect on the counter-offensive, — Tarnavsky emphasized.
He explained that now neither the Ukrainian Armed Forces nor the occupation forces of the Russian Federation use large formations, companies, battalions or brigades during combat operations.
– We use assault squads, groups of 10-15 people. “They carry out a titanic job, focusing enemy fire on themselves and using all the means available to them to survive,” the general added.
One of the reasons that the counteroffensive is not developing as quickly as expected”, Tarnavsky said that the Russian Federation was able to learn some lessons from other Ukrainian offensive operations.
However, Ukrainian troops are changing their tactics and adapting to the use of Western weapons.
Previously the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Kirill Budanov, stated that the counteroffensive would continue even after the onset of cold and wet weather. He also predicted that by winter the Ukrainian Armed Forces could break through the so-called land corridor between the occupied Crimea and the territory of the Russian Federation.
And the head of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley noted that the Ukrainian Defense Forces will continue the counter-offensive in the winter, when heavy equipment can move on frozen ground.
