On the night of September 13, hostilities began on the border between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Azerbaijan has accused Armenia of committing a large-scale provocation on the border. The corresponding message was published by the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan.
Relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia are tense. Igor Semivolos, director of the Center for Middle East Studies, said this on channel 24.
He explained that when 2 armies are close to each other and are at war, situations like this happen regularly. This is not the first escalation and not the first aggravation.
“I would not now find out who started it. After all, here each side will put forward its own version. It is more important to understand what the parties mean,” said Semivolos.
It undoubtedly has, perhaps not a direct, but indirect relation to the defeat of the Russian troops near Kharkov. After all, Azerbaijan sees a window of opportunity now, since Russia is weak and unable to effectively help its ally,” Igor Semivolos explained.
According to him, Azerbaijan has a chance to complete the issue allegedly agreed under the 2020 trilateral agreement year.
The expert noted that at the same time, each implementation of the agreements reached is only due to the pressure of Azerbaijan, because it is interested that this agreement be fully implemented. Armenia is interested in postponing the deal as much as possible. After all, she wants to restore her army, weapons and achieve revenge.
Igor Semivolos noted that key issues have not been resolved between the countries:
- corridors,
- “status”,
- peace agreement.
“Armenia wants to pause all these issues. It is not profitable for her to decide all this now, because she is in a losing position. And It is beneficial for Azerbaijan to do this as soon as possible,” the expert added.
What is known about the escalation
- The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry stressed that the “invasion of the territory of Armenia” is nothing more than nonsense . They stressed that Armenia is the aggressor and occupier in the region
- Against the backdrop of another deterioration in the situation on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan decided to ask Russia for help.
- US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken expressed “deep concern”. He called on countries to stop hostilities.
