Will there be blackouts due to a shortage in the energy system in winter: explanation from the Ministry of Energy

by alex

During the heating season, a deficit may occur in the energy system. However, this does not automatically apply rolling blackouts.

Such explanations were given by Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine Yaroslav Demchenkov on the air of the United News telethon.

He explained that due to lower air temperatures and shorter daylight hours, electricity consumption is increasing. Consumers turn on heating devices and lights more often.

Particularly significant load on the energy system occurs in the morning and evening.

According to Demchenkov, “it has always been this way, it is not something unique.” And for energy workers, such peak fluctuations are nothing new.

– A lack of electricity is possible, and this is not something critical. This does not mean that any forced technical restrictions on electricity consumption will be applied,” the deputy minister emphasized.

How will Ukraine react to electricity shortages?

Yaroslav Demchenkov noted that power engineers have “different algorithms for how to act.”

Power companies are working to avoid rolling blackouts . The situation today “is quite dynamic and changes every hour.”

Demchenkov assured that the Ministry of Energy, together with energy companies, is doing everything to balance the energy system and increase generating capacity.

If necessary , they will import electricity from other countries. Typically, imports are made from Slovakia, Romania, and Moldova.

The Ministry of Energy also urges consumers to use electricity more economically .

Do not turn on powerful electrical devices at the same time. It is necessary to turn off the lights in empty rooms and use energy-intensive devices at night.

– We are not talking about the use of these rolling blackouts. But we all need a little help to the power grid so that we get electricity every hour, minute, second. To do this, you need to be a little more thrifty,” Demchenkov said.

He noted that power engineers are doing everything possible to ensure that winter, increased consumption and possible shelling by the Russian Federation do not affect the stability of energy consumption.

Demchenkov assured that the situation is “completely under control.”

Deficiency in the energy system: what is known

On the morning of November 22, a shortage of electricity was recorded in the Ukrainian energy system. Ukrenergo predicted that it could rise in the evening.

The company identified three main reasons for the shortage: increased consumption due to cold weather; increased accident rate of power plant units; insufficient volumes of electricity imports from the European Union

“Some of the power units are still being rebuilt after being hit by Russian missiles and drones, and the restored ones cannot carry the same load as before the damage,” Ukrenergo explained.

There are currently 9 nuclear power plant units operating in Ukraine. They generate more than 55% of consumers' electricity needs.

Thermal generation units are also expected to be removed from repair. To cover the needs, it is planned to increase electricity production at hydroelectric power stations.
