Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba thanked German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, in particular, for asking Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to leave the hall, which made it possible to make a decision to begin negotiations on Ukraine's membership in the EU.
Kuleba said this in an interview with Bild.
— What German Chancellor Olaf Scholz did at the summit to defuse the threat of a Hungarian veto will go down in history as an act of German leadership in the interests of Europe. This week the German Chancellor has won much sincere and well-deserved admiration in the hearts of Ukrainians, — he said.
The Minister noted that last year calls for Berlin to take the initiative regarding Ukraine’s membership in the EU were not heard. Experts and politicians in Germany said that their country does not want to be a leader.

Kuleba added that he is glad about the changes in Germany’s position towards Ukraine.
He noted that Ukraine has many reasons to be grateful to Germany, from military aid to financial support, but political clarity regarding Ukraine's membership in the EU — this is “perhaps the best Christmas gift from Berlin”.
— Gray areas in Europe are no longer possible. Either you paint the map of Europe in EU colors to ensure security and prosperity for all Europeans, or Putin paints it with blood and brings more suffering, instability and destruction. I'm glad we've all felt safer and more confident this week — Kuleba emphasized.
December 14, the European Council decided to begin negotiations on the accession of Ukraine and Moldova to the European Union, and also granted Georgia candidate status for EU membership.
