Poland: Why a border with Lithuania and Germany was introduced

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Poland would renew border controls with Germany and Lithuania from July 7 for 30 days, or until August 5. He explained that the measures were aimed at reducing the flow of illegal migrants who cross the border uncontrolled.

In June 2025 alone, German authorities refused entry to 163 foreigners at border crossings in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship due to new border controls.

Thousands of security forces have been deployed to strengthen temporary border controls. Interior and Administration Minister Tomasz Siemoniak stressed that only representatives of the Border Guard have the right to conduct checks.

Checks on the German-Polish border are carried out at 52 designated points, 16 of which are permanent.

There are 13 checkpoints operating in the Lithuanian direction, including two stationary posts.

West Pomeranian Voivode Adam Rudawski noted that the priority is to prevent illegal entry into the country, but controls should not hinder the movement of local residents and migrant workers.

The authorities assured that logistics are organized in such a way as to minimize traffic jams and ensure comfortable movement for Polish citizens and tourists.

Temporary changes in traffic due to controls on the Polish-German border

In connection with the resumption of temporary controls on the Polish-German border, a new traffic management scheme has been introduced at a number of key border crossings.

The following crossing points are in question: Lyubeshin (route DK10), Kolbaskovo (A6), Rosuvek (DK13) and Kraynik Dolny (DK26). All of them serve both passenger and freight transport. Speed limits have been introduced in the specified locations, as well as traffic restrictions on certain lanes.

Crossing control will be carried out at 19 locations, including Osinów Dolny-Hohenwutzen, Krajnk Dolny-Schwedt, Griffino-Mescherin and Lubieszyn-Linken.

There are four main checkpoints in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship.

According to the border service, checks are carried out using mobile technical equipment. The officers focus on checking passenger documents, as well as the legality of the person's stay in the country.

Let us recall that several Schengen countries, in particular Germany, have been maintaining controls on their external borders for some time now. Thus, since 2015, checks have been in place on the border with Austria, and since October 2023 – with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland.
