California has begun collecting signatures to start an initiative to secede from the United States and declare its independence. If Californians support it, the state will have the opportunity to leave the United States in 2028.

For California to be considered for independence, at least 50% of registered voters must vote for Calexit now, and at least 55%—or more than 500,000 people—must vote “yes” by July 22. The state would then express “no confidence in the United States” and begin voting to secede in 2028. However, California can already remove all US flags from administrative buildings.
