Germany accepted many Ukrainians who left the country because of the war. Most of them do not know German, so they can only count on the minimum wage. Let's figure out what the minimum wage will be in Germany in 2024.

The Minimum Wage Commission (die Mindestlohn-Kommission), which includes representatives of trade unions and employers, has proposed increasing the legal minimum wage at the beginning of 2024.
The planned increase will be 41 cents per hour. Thus, the minimum wage level will reach €12.41 per hour, which represents an increase of approximately 3.4%. The next stage of increasing the lower salary limit – to €12.82 – is scheduled for the period from January 1, 2025. The minimum wage commission's proposal must be approved by the government.
Increasing the minimum wage to €12.41 in 2024 would increase wages by just 3% compared to the annual inflation rate of 6.1%.
That's why at a press conference Stefan Kerzell, board member of the German Trade Union Federation (DGB), said in order to provide a basic compensation for inflation, the minimum wage must rise to at least €13.50 per hour. However, the chairman of the commission and representatives of employers did not support this proposal.
Note that in 2023 the minimum wage in Germany was €12 per hour.
Special studies have shown that employees who do physical work earn less. According to Gehalt.de, people working in the gastronomy and service industries earn the least in Germany.
In general, the salary level for professions in Germany is as follows:
- pastry chef, baker – €34,647 before deductions (€2,887 per month);
- butcher – €34,959 (€2,913 per month);
- painter – €35,603 (€2,967 per month);
- plumber, specialist in air conditioning and heating systems – €43,777 (€3,648 per month);
- metalworker, milling machine, welder – €42,533 (€3,544 per month);
- mechanic – €47,104 per month (about €3,925 per month).
According to research, doctors and customer service managers earn the most in Germany – €80,772 and €75,671 per year.
