Factors influencing the depth of the Dnieper in Kyiv:
- time of year, because the water level in the river rises in the spring due to melting snow and falls in the fall;
- regulating water flow, since the dams of the Kyiv and Kanev reservoirs play their role;
- deepening or silting of the bottom also affects the depth.
What is the depth of the Dnieper in Kyiv under the pedestrian bridge
The maximum depth of the Dnieper, reaching 19 meters, is recorded below the Pedestrian Bridge.
This value is not constant and depends on a number of factors:
- Bottom topography, since the river bed is winding, with holes and rifts, which causes uneven depth.
- Human intervention. In the past, to ensure navigation, they took soil from the right bank, deepening the channel.
The Kiev reservoir did not significantly change its depth, but the Kanevskoye reservoir, built in 1972, led to the deepening of some sections from 1.6 to 4 meters. The widening of the channel and the slowing of the river flow were additional consequences.
After the construction of the hydroelectric power station, fluctuations in water levels leveled out. Previously, flooding of low-lying areas (mainly Podil) was not uncommon. The last of them happened in 1970, when Hydropark was under water, and the metro station was not working for several days.
The average speed of the Dnieper current in Kyiv is 0.5-1 m/s.
Knowing the depth of the Dnieper, you can safely swim and engage in water sports, choose a place for fishing, plan a route for a boat trip.
