What could push Scholz to help Ukraine more actively: an unexpected method

by alex

Olaf Scholz, Chancellor of Germany , once again stated that he is against providing Taurus to Ukraine. This position of Scholz is surprising, because Germany sends air defense systems to our country and supports it in various ways, but is categorically against the supply of long-range missiles. This causes controversial discussions in the world, in particular, criticism towards the chancellor.

Chief consultant of the National Institute for Strategic Studies Ivan Uss told 24 Channelthat such criticism could affect Scholz's speed of decision-making. His coalition partners in Germany also disagree with the chancellor's decision regarding Taurus missiles for Ukraine.

What could change Scholz's position

Ivan Uss noted that information recently appeared that there was a three-hour dinner between NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and German Foreign Minister Annalena Bärbock. There is information that the topic was Ukraine.

If Scholz does not want to lose leadership in Germany or the initiative in supporting Ukraine, then he also needs to do certain statements, like those made by Emmanuel Macron, he suggested.

There is a risk that such pressure from partners on Scholz will work in the opposite direction. However, according to Ivan Us, given the pragmatism of Germany, criticism will push the chancellor in the right direction.

He will understand which is the right side of this story borrow, so that later it could be said that Germany played a leading role in the victory of Ukraine, – said Uss.

Still, a discrepancy arises, because Germany provides important assistance to Ukraine, but refuses provide Taurus missiles and denies the issue of introducing foreign troops into the territory of Ukraine.

This all raises questions. It is not known whether Scholz really wants to see the victory of Ukraine, and not postpone the hypothetically possible war between Russia and Germany in the event of Ukraine’s defeat, said Ivan Uss.

Aid to Ukraine from Germany

  • Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Germany’s position regarding the transfer of long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine has not changed. He stressed that his decision on “one weapons system” remains “clear.” Obviously, the German chancellor had in mind the Taurus long-range cruise missiles. However, Scholz said that Germany will continue to supply Ukraine with multiple launch rocket systems, since this is its “task.”
  • Olaf Scholz said that NATO partners have found Ukraine has six more air defense systems. The other day, the country already announced that it would “immediately” transfer one Patriot system amid constant shelling from Russia.
  • Vladimir Zelensky explained why Olaf Scholz does not agree to supply long-range missiles to Ukraine Taurus. The President of Ukraine answered a journalist’s question about whether Olaf Scholz’s position is connected with Vladimir Putin’s nuclear threats.
