It is wrong to compare the effectiveness of Patriot, IRIS-T and NASAMS. These air defense systems are responsible for shooting down different targets.
This opinion was voiced to Channel 24 by military expert, editor-in-chief of Defense Express Oleg Katkov. The Air Force is effectively working on enemy missiles – since September, more than 500 air targets have already been shot down.
Comparing different air defense systems is wrong
Katkov said that Patriot, NASAMS, IRIS-T are different complexes and it is wrong to compare them. For example, Patriot is more of a missile defense system and it can work on ballistic missiles, but NASAMS and IRIS-T are not. These 2 complexes are medium-range complexes – 20-40 km.
It should be understood that all weapons work in the system. That is, all these complexes are interconnected, support each other, work in the same information space and create the same layered air defense. If a shahid flies, then it should not be a Patriot that shoots him down, but when a ballistic missile flies, a Patriot should be responsible for this,” the military expert noted.

Modern air defense systems are much better than Soviet ones
He continued that modern air defense systems are not Soviet ones, the average age of which is more than 30 years. What our anti-aircraft gunners are squeezing out of Soviet systems is really fantastic. They had limited upgrades. Modern complexes are complexes of a new generation.
“They are much better and have many times more efficiency. They are much more multi-channel, and can destroy a much larger number of targets at a time, they have a much better guidance, control, maneuverability, and warhead system,” said the editor-in-chief of Defense Express.
According to him, comparing NASAMS, IRIS-T, Patriot systems with Soviet systems is the same as comparing computers of the 80s with modern ones. It is clear which one is better.
