The International Criminal Court in The Hague has previously issued an arrest warrant for the Russian dictator, according to which Vladimir Putin is to be arrested in a number of countries, including Mongolia. However, for some reason the country refuses to do so.

Therefore, members of the European Parliament, in particular the Vice-Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Urmas Paet, are calling on the EU High Representative Josep Borrell to respond to the behavior of Mongolia, a member of the ICC, if the country does not arrest Putin.

Mongolia's refusal to arrest Putin will set a precedent

The day before, Vladimir Putin arrived in Mongolia on a visit. As Urmas Paet noted, if the country arrests the Russian dictator, as required by the ICC decision, it will have a historic opportunity to become a guarantor of international law.

We simply have to fulfill the demand of the International Criminal Court – to arrest the criminal Putin and deliver him to The Hague, – he said.

According to him, if Mongolia does not fulfill its obligations as a member of the ICC, the European Union must send a clear signal in the form of diplomatic and economic measures. In particular, members of the European Parliament condemn the invitation that Mongolia sent to Putin.

“Mongolia's refusal to arrest Putin will set a precedent and open the way for other countries to selectively apply arrest warrants of the International Criminal Court,” members of the European Parliament noted in their address.

By the way, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry announced a blow to the system of international criminal law. The foreign ministry added that they will work on the consequences for Ulaanbaatar. This was stated by the representative of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, Georgy Tykhyi.
