Georgia's Ruling Party Surprises with Statement on 2008 War with Russia/Collage by Channel 24

The founder of Georgia's ruling party said that the country's then government was to blame for the 2008 war with Russia. Bidzina Ivanishvili promised voters that the Georgian “Nuemberg Trials” would soon take place.

Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder of the “Georgian Dream”, said that Georgia should apologize for the 2008 war. The politician made this statement while speaking to the population in the city of Gori. On October 26, parliamentary elections will be held in the country.

Apologies for the occupation by the Russians

Thus, Ivanishvili noted that “the August war of 2008 was not the will of either the Georgian or Ossetian people.”

The politician assured that immediately after the elections, “the instigators of the war will be brought to justice,” and the Georgians, he said, will find the strength to apologize for the actions of Saakashvili's National Movement party, because of which, allegedly, “the flames engulfed our Ossetian sisters and brothers.”

I promise you that the Georgian Nuneberg Trials will soon take place, which will certainly become a prerequisite for our reconciliation. One of the advantages of Georgians has always been the ability to look reality in the eye, no matter how bitter it may be, Ivanishvili said

The official also noted that during the 12 years of “uninterrupted peace” in Georgia, he became even more convinced that “recognizing one's own mistakes, mentioning the centuries-old brotherhood and friendship between Georgians and Ossetians will be the beginning of a path that encourages people living on both sides of the dividing line to want to restore trust.”

The founder of the “Georgian Dream” separately spoke about relations with Russia. According to him, “in parallel with European integration, it is necessary to take a principled but correct position with regard to Russia.”

Reference: The Russian-Georgian War of 2008 was an armed conflict between Georgia on one side and Russia and separatist groups in South Ossetia and Abkhazia on the other. At that time, the Russians attacked Georgia allegedly to protect the “Russian-speaking population” in two regions of the country. The “peace enforcement” operation, which began on August 8, lasted five days and ended with the de facto Russian occupation of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

By the way, the Georgian pro-Russian party “Justice for Peace” recently proposed that Russia “restore strategic justice” and conclude a new “Treaty of St. George”.
