We do not understand it quite correctly, the political scientist explained the purpose of the agreement between Ukraine and the EU Dzvenislava Moshovskaya

Ukraine and the European Union signed an agreement on security 27 June. This landmark event took place at the EU Leaders' Summit.

It is important to understand that this is a bilateral agreement. For it to continue, certain obligations must be fulfilled not only by the European Union, but also by our state. Political scientist Andrei Vigirinsky told 24 Channel that Ukraine, having determined the course towards European integration, must complete many tasks in order to become part of the EU.

Agreement between Ukraine and the EU

According to Vigirinsky, Ukraine, having signed an agreement with the EU, agreed to comply with all points, which are stated in this document. One of them is the point about the values of the European Union, where the main thesis is respect for all citizens, including national minorities.

We are not quite correctly understood this agreement, which concerns obligations to provide mutual assistance. It lies in the fact that all conditions are derived from our European integration aspirations,” he said.

Ukraine's aspiration to become part of the European Union is impossible without restructuring the internal organization of the state. The political scientist noted that the concepts of human dignity, freedom, and democracy are not secondary to joining the EU.

Our whole life is not individual reforms. The European Union will evaluate all elements of Ukrainian life from the standpoint of compliance with their rules, emphasized Andrey Vigirinsky.

He believes that if Ukraine does not implement changes within its society in accordance with the criteria of the countries European Union, then the signed security obligations may not be fulfilled.

“The agreement (between Ukraine and the EU – Channel 24) says that it should be considered as part of the road membership in the European Union. This is a constant requirement,” said the political scientist.

Warnings of the European Union

In the EU, when accepting new members, there are fears of including countries with “unstable democracies”, where society and political elites, for example, to the European Parliament, can choose unreliable candidates.

< p class="bloquote cke-markup">Simply after signing the document on EU membership, awareness of the right decisions will not appear. It requires a long mental rethinking by Ukrainians of what previously seemed familiar to them, but is unacceptable for the liberal-democratic world,” noted Andrey Vigirinsky.

He added that Ukraine’s entry into The EU may be a long process given the stress of war and post-Soviet economic development. The requirements for joining the European Union are not limited only to the implementation of reforms – they depend on the mental growth of every Ukrainian.
