How much Ukraine spends on the maintenance of one prisoner/Collage of Channel 24

Ukrainian authorities have organized a special camp in one of the western regions to hold Russian prisoners of war. However, all of them need to be kept in normal conditions.

The Minister of Justice of Ukraine Denys Malyuska told Channel 24 about this. In total, 3 thousand hryvnias are needed per prisoner of war of the occupier.

According to him, this money is spent on food, clothing, hygiene products and utility bills. In addition, there are expenses for medical equipment, medicines, staff salaries.

International organizations are also asking for financial help so that the costs of prisoners of war are not on taxpayers.

How we differ from the enemy

The fact that we comply with international standards – we is fundamentally different from our enemy. And our enemy is “an aggressor who despises all standards, goes beyond international frameworks and agreements, violates them.”

They were expelled from all institutions, respectively, they untied their hands and turned into such a “scarecrow” that went beyond the limits of civilization, – added Malysh.

About the detention of occupiers' prisoners of war

More often than not, they are kept in pre-trial detention centers, although not always. Those who are not yet planned to be exchanged in the near future are being moved closer to the West of Ukraine. However, the overall picture changes weekly.

In general, as the minister added, the system is debugged. The conditions of detention are somewhat different from those of prisoners and convicts. Plus, there is additional control from the Red Cross.

“They can check compliance with all requirements and our international obligations, so that later there will be no unnecessary shouting that we are mocking or violating the Geneva Convention, or committing war crimes,” – Malyuska explained.

Where prisoners are placed

  • The Ministry of Justice reported that Russian soldiers who have just been taken prisoner, or for whom there are plans to exchange them for Ukrainian defenders, are placed in penitentiary institutions throughout almost the entire territory of Ukraine.
  • They are kept separately from other prisoners for the safety of the prisoners of war themselves.
  • Therefore, a special camp for prisoners of war was created in Western Ukraine, where those who are not expected to be exchanged in the near future are kept.
