Guterres explained why he avoids loud statements for the media/Delo

UN Secretary-General António Guterres, at a briefing with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, explained why he does not give loud statements to the media. He stressed that this could harm the evacuation.

At the briefing, António Guterres answered the journalist's questions quite harshly. He noted that any of his statements now could prevent the rescue of the inhabitants of Mariupol, Channel 24 reports.

Guterres prioritizes people, not loud statements

Do you want people to be rescued or do you want me to say something? Something will be an obstacle to this rescue (people from Mariupol – Channel 24), he said.

Guterres added that for now he can only say that he is doing everything possible to save people from Mariupol. Therefore, he will not give any comments that may interfere with this opportunity.

My priority is the people who are suffering now and need to be saved,” Guterres emphasized.

The UN Secretary General added that he would not voice that he would not contribute to the current work . If people fail to evacuate, he stressed, “the right decisions will be made at the right time.”
