US trading partners to receive letters about new tariffs – Trump announces details

by alex

The United States is again threatening to raise tariffs: the Donald Trump administration plans to introduce new duties on countries that have not reached trade agreements with the United States from August 1.

The Guardian reports this.

Trump made this statement to journalists, adding that starting Monday, July 8, partners will receive official letters or notifications about the agreements concluded.

The US President specified that this concerns approximately 12-15 countries. If there is no agreement by July 9, the actions will come into force on August 1. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick explained that the letters were a warning, and the tariff increase will take effect in August.

In April, Trump announced a base tariff of 10% and additional tariffs of up to 50%, but later delayed them. Countries now have three weeks to avoid new tariffs, but markets are worried about prolonged uncertainty.

Against this backdrop, the US and EU have held a series of talks – and, according to European Commission spokesman Olof Gill, are close to an “agreement in principle” that could be announced as early as this week. The EU is demanding the abolition of tariffs on cars (29.5%) and a reduction in duties on steel.

Trump also threatened an additional 10% tariff on the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) if they supported anti-American policies. China criticized these statements, stressing that tariffs are not a tool for coercion.

Against this backdrop, stock indices in Asia and Europe showed mixed dynamics, and prices for copper and aluminum went down.
