United States President Donald Trump intends to pressure European NATO allies to increase defense spending — to a new level of 5% of GDP.
This was stated by US National Security Advisor Michael Walz in an interview with The New York Post.

The US presidential advisor believes that Trump is absolutely right when he demands that allies invest more in defense.

According to him, the United States will continue to have direct and frank conversations to get NATO member states to increase their defense contributions.
At the same time, US Special Presidential Representative for Special Missions Rick Grenell said that it is dangerous to undermine NATO by not paying its fair share of its own commitments.
It is worth noting that in 2014, NATO member states agreed to increase defense spending to 2% of GDP. However, eight countries have not yet reached this figure.
Trump recently called on NATO countries to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP. According to him, it was the US that had previously compensated for the difference in funding.
