US Senate Democrats blocked aid to Israel separate from aid to Ukraine

On Tuesday, November 7, US Senate Democrats blocked an attempt by Republicans to quickly approve an emergency aid bill for Israel that passed the House of Representatives last week but does not include assistance to Ukraine in its war with Russia.

Reuters writes about this.

“Time is of the essence, and it is imperative that the Senate does not delay this critical aid to Israel for a single day,” said Republican Senator Roger Marshall .

Democrats countered by emphasizing the importance of providing aid to Ukraine as well as Israel, in addition to humanitarian aid, border security funding and funds to counter China in the Indo-Pacific region, which were included in President Joe Biden's $106 billion funding request. Congress last month.

They also accused Republicans of playing politics with Israel's crisis by delaying aid to the Jewish state by tying it to cuts to the Internal Revenue Service, a favorite Republican target, rather than producing a bipartisan bill.

The House bill would give Israel $14.3 billion to deal with the deadly Oct. 7 attack by Hamas militants, but would cut funding for the Internal Revenue Service by the same amount. The funds include $4 billion to purchase Israel's Iron Dome and David's Sling defense systems to counter short-range missile threats, as well as some transfers of equipment from US stockpiles.

“Our allies in Ukraine can afford a delay no more than our allies in Israel,” said Senator Patty Murray , who chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Voting in the House of Representatives took place largely along party lines. Democrats have called the proposed tax cut a politically motivated “poison pill” that would increase the US budget deficit by reducing tax collection. They also stated that it is necessary to continue to support Ukraine.

To become law, the bill must pass the Democratic-controlled Senate, the Republican-majority House, and be signed by Biden, a Democrat. The White House said Biden would veto the House bill.

Senate leaders are preparing their own additional funding bill and hope to introduce it as soon as this week.
