US and Israeli Defense Ministers Discuss Invasion of Lebanon/Collage by Channel 24

On September 30, Israel launched a limited ground operation in Lebanon, striking Beirut and its suburbs. The United States responded to the new phase of the conflict in the confrontation between the IDF and Hezbollah.

Earlier it became known that Israel informed Washington of its intention to enter Lebanon. U.S. officials have warned their ally that the limited ground operation could eventually expand into a long-term invasion.

The U.S. Reaction

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke by phone with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on Sept. 30.

The U.S. official expressed support for Israel's actions, stressing that the United States agreed with the need to dismantle the infrastructure used by Hezbollah to launch attacks on northern Israel. Austin stressed that the operation was necessary to prevent a repeat of the attacks that took place on October 7.

Austin also made it clear to his colleague that the United States supports Israel's right to self-defense.

While expressing support for the IDF operation, Austin stressed that the invasion is not an end in itself.

In addition, the minister made it clear that Washington is ready to protect U.S. personnel, partners and allies in the face of threats from Iran and Iranian-backed terrorist organizations, and intends to prevent anyone from exploiting tensions or escalating the conflict.

By the way, unknown individuals attacked a U.S. military base with Katyusha rockets.
