US intelligence was unaware of the plan for the Hamas attack on Israel, which occurred on October 7, 2023.
This was stated by National Security Council Speaker John Kirby after the NYT newspaper reported that Israel knew about the militant attack plan a year ago.
“The Intelligence Community noted that they did not have access to this document,” Kirby said.
Asked whether the US should have been briefed on the attack plans, Kirby said: Intelligence is a puzzle, and sometimes you put things together and get a pretty good picture, and sometimes there are pieces of the puzzle missing.

He also did not answer questions about whether the Oct. 7 attack was a failure of Israeli intelligence, saying there would be a “time and place” for Israel to further investigate what went wrong.
Politico previously reported that there was no indication that Israel shared this with the United States.
The New York Times story said that military and intelligence officials did not believe Hamas' plan to attack Israel, considering it too difficult to carry out.
The nearly 40-page document, which Israeli authorities have dubbed the Wall of Jericho, details a plan to attack Israel. The document did not specify the date of the invasion, but described a methodical assault.
