US destroyer and commercial ships attacked Houthis in the Red Sea: what is known

by alex

In the Red Sea, commercial ships and the US Navy destroyer USS Carney were attacked by drones and missiles.

In self-defense, the American warship opened fire – the US destroyer shot down at least two drones launched at it.

Yemen's Houthis later claimed attacks on two ships they said were related to Israel, but did not acknowledge the attack on the US Navy ship.

The AP said the attack potentially marked a major escalation in a series of maritime attacks in the Middle East linked to the war between Israel and Hamas.

“We are aware of reports of attacks on the US Navy destroyer USS Carney and commercial vessels in the Red Sea and will provide information as it becomes available,” the Defense Department said in an interview with the AP.

USS Carney is an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer. During the war, he has already shot down several missiles fired by the Houthis towards Israel.

A US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the destroyer was not damaged in the attack and there were no casualties on board.

The USS Carney responded to a report from the Bahamas-flagged Unity Explorer that it was under attack from missile fire, according to a US Department of Defense spokesman. During the attack, USS Carney shot down two drones: one in self-defense and the other after checking the status of Unity Explorer.
