The United States has decided to transfer additional troops to the Middle East. This should help de-escalate rising tensions in the region

Regional tensions have risen following the assassination of Ismail Ghaniya, the leader of the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, in Tehran, and Fouad Shukr, a senior military commander in the Lebanese group Hezbollah, in Beirut.

What the US is doing to ease tensions in the Middle East

US President Joe Biden will convene his national security team in the Situation Room on Monday, August 5, to discuss developments in the Middle East, the White House said. It added that the American leader will also speak with Jordan's King Abdullah.

The American news service Axios reported that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told his G7 counterparts that Iran and Hezbollah could begin attacking Israel as early as August 5, citing three sources briefed on the conversation. But Blinken, according to Axios, said it was unclear how exactly Iran and Hezbollah would attack, and did not know the exact timing.

The Pentagon said Friday it would deploy additional fighter jets and Navy warships to the region.

The overall goal is to “lower the temperature” in the region, deter and defend against these attacks, and avoid a regional conflict, said Jonathan Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser.

The Pentagon also noted that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had reaffirmed U.S. support for Israel's security and “the right to defend itself against threats from Iran, Lebanon's Hezbollah, the Houthis, and other Iranian-backed terrorist groups groups”.

In addition, Antony Blinken also spoke with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani on August 4 and stressed the importance of “all parties taking steps to calm regional tensions, avoid further escalation, and promote stability.”

By the way, Joe Biden expressed hope that Iran will not take revenge on Israel for the murder of Hamas leader Ismail Ghaniya. At the same time, the American leader stressed that he does not know exactly what final decision Iran will make.
