US Customs mistook OnePlus headphones for fake AirPods

American customs officials reported on the detention of a batch of fake AirPods, in which social media users and journalists recognized the original OnePlus headphones. The service reported the incident on its Twitter account.

A message about the seizure of a large batch of fake headphones with the caption “This is not Apple” appeared on the social networks of the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Federal agents showed photographs of the seized goods and said the shipment had been seized from a carrier at John F. Kennedy Airport, New York. According to official figures, the shipment was sent from Hong Kong to Nevada and contained 2,000 fake headsets. “If the AirPods were genuine, then the entire batch could be estimated at 398 thousand dollars,” – said in the message.

Social media users and reporters have noticed that the accessories shown in the photos are more like the OnePlus Buds headset than the fake Apple headphones. In particular, the journalists of The Verge criticized the customs officers, noting that they reported the detention with such pride, “as if they found a fake work of art of the 18th century.” CBP's Twitter post also featured a comment from the official OnePlus account asking customs officials to take action and return the headphones back.

Some social media users mocked the situation by suggesting that Honda vehicles, Huawei smartphones, Dell laptops and Nike sneakers, which are “obviously fakes” of Mercedes-Benz cars, iPhones, MacBook Pros and Adidas shoes, respectively, should be detained at customs.

The OnePlus Buds wireless earbuds were unveiled at the end of July. The cost of the headset from the OnePlus brand, which has a reputation in certain circles as the “killer of Apple”, was $ 79.
